Hacko is an open-source kit that aids in the recovery of rice bran by producing nukazuke, a nutritious by-product of grain cultivation. Nukazuke is a Japanese pickle produced by fermenting vegetables in rice bran—a healthy food process that dates back hundreds of years. Through interaction with the Hackos, bran goes through a fermentation process. The process consists of taking care of the Nukazuke by feeding it with vegetable scraps until it is ready to start pickling.
Hacko was initially idealised by G.Bruno, K.Sohara, and G.Rubino for the Open Food Factory, then developed in Polifactory with M.Comola, F.Denni, L.Grosso, V.Libardo, A.Somenzi for the Distributed Design Platform, later becoming co-authors. The presented project is a development by M.Comola, F.Denni, V.Libardo, G.Rubino, A.Somenzi presented at the James Dyson Award.
