The workshop explores natural dyeing and biomaterial-making as accessible, low-tech practices rooted in material literacy and collective knowledge.
The session is structured in two parts. In the first, participants will learn how to dye textiles using seasonal plants and food scraps (onions, turmeric, coffee, tea, and any seasonal fruits and vegetables available) combined with basic binding and folding techniques to create patterns on fabric. In the second part, the leftover dye water becomes the raw material for biomaterial experimentation. Using agar agar and gelatine, participants will produce their own samples in petri dishes, testing two different open-source recipes and exploring the properties and possible applications of each material. Flyers of recipes, resources and instruction will be distributed by the tutor.
Throughout both parts, the workshop activates conversations around material literacy, the politics of making, and the vitality of matter, drawing on Jane Bennett's concept of ‘Vibrant Matter’. The session will close with a collective gesture: all pieces produced will be gathered and displayed at Gentler Futures Festival, offering a shared and visible trace of the group's process.
No prior knowledge required. Natural textiles will be provided but participants are welcome to bring their own fabric scraps to dye. Participants should wear comfortable clothing appropriate for manual activities.
