Planetary Dialogues is an archival publication developed in collaboration with the newly established MArch Design Practice course at the Royal College of Art (UK). Bringing together ethnographic documentation and collective authorship, it traces how “planetary” pedagogies are reshaping architectural education, repositioning both the role of architectural practice and the practitioner in a time of ecological and social crisis. It demonstrates both the range of planetary pedagogies in the course, both objective and subjective, as well as the embedded student voice and how emerging pedagogies have triggered student reflection in dialogue with the planetary. The structure of the publication is informed by the unit structure of the 11-month course, presenting each unit brief, followed by diverse student responses. Not only does it document situated pedagogies that are shaping the future of the architectural practitioner in a time of crisis, but it also documents a shift in fundamental architectural education to encourage the active inclusion of the voice of the planetary.
Gemma Louisa Adeler-Bjarnø Holdaway is a British/Danish multidisciplinary researcher, exploring planetary pedagogies in architectural education. She has worked in educational institutions, focusing on student experiences in learning environments, and currently works in the built environment industry. She will start her PhD in Architecture at the Royal College of Art in 2026.
