SOS Heater is an open-source portable heater that saves energy. The displayed device is a low-energy heater prototype developed in community and made mostly of repurposed everyday objects. With a low wattage of 250W, it combines infrared light and ceramic casing to deliver radiant heat and direct warmth through contact. The solution is affordable and compatible with low-power and off-the-grid electric installations. Initially created as a response to the social issue of energy poverty, it also proposes a sustainable way to heat people, instead of places.
SOS Heater is a social impact initiative born in the garages of Lisbon’s Maker community, aiming to make heating more accessible and sustainable. In a context of high energy bills and looming environmental crises, an informal collective of makers, designers, students, and low-tech enthusiasts- the Heating Squad, are taking matters into their own hands to bring about an affordable-to-use and sustainable heating solution.
